This holiday season, millions of packages will be delivered to homes throughout the country. Unfortunately, many of these items never reach their intended destination due to theft. Package piracy can happen to anyone, but Bellevue Police remind you that there are ways you can reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of this common crime.
First, consider an alternate delivery method. You can specify that a package be held with the carrier at a local outlet, such as the post office or UPS/FedEx store. You can then pick up your item at a time that is convenient for you.
Second, consider purchasing a locking mailbox or parcel deposit box. Many package thefts are crimes of opportunity, and a locking mailbox is an effective deterrent.
Finally, reroute or reschedule your package. Many carriers allow you to specify a specific delivery time, so consider scheduling deliveries at a time you will be home. Go to the carrier’s website or download their app on your smartphone.
