Bellevue Police find improvised explosive device during theft arrest on Oct. 4

The Bellevue Police Department announced the agency was able to safely dismantle an improvised explosive device (IED) following the arrest of 30-year-old Johny Mixayboua on Sunday, Oct. 4. 

The original call for service began at approximately 6 p.m. when Bellevue Police Officers were dispatched to reports of a theft in progress at the 600 block of 156th Ave NE. With the help of a business representative at the location, Officers were able to quickly identify and contact Mixayboua for allegedly shoplifting.

Mixayboua provided officers with false information about his identity. While officers were detaining the suspect, it appeared as if he were reaching toward an item in his jacket, discovered to be a firearm. Officers were able to quickly disarm the suspect.

Bellevue Officers found a key fob in the suspect’s possession following the arrest and determined the vehicle he was driving was reported stolen. After locating the vehicle in the parking lot, officers discovered what appeared to be an IED inside the car. The Bellevue Police Department’s Bomb Squad was dispatched to the scene. Bomb technicians were able to confirm the legitimacy of the device and safely remove it from the scene without any injuries to the public and later dismantle it.  

The suspect was arrested for the following crimes:  

Assault – 1st Degree (One Count) 

Driving with License Suspended – 1st Degree (One Count) 

Possession of a Stolen Firearm (One Count) 

Weapons Violation, Unlawful Possession of a Firearm – 1st Degree (One Count) 

Obstruction of Law Enforcement (One Count) 

Making False or Misleading Statements (One Count) 

The suspect also had existing warrants in King County and with the U.S. Marshalls. Mixayboua was booked into the King County Jail.
