Suspects arrested near Newcastle Beach Park

Bellevue police arrested two suspects following a string of burglaries, car thefts, attempted robbery, and motor vehicle prowls.  Officers arrested the 37-year-old male suspect on charges of Attempted Robbery, Burglary 1 & 2, Possession of Stolen Vehicle and Unlawful Possession of Firearms.  His 36-year-old female accomplice was arrested on charges of Motor Vehicle Prowl. Detectives say more charges against both suspects are under investigation.

The crime spree began on March 15, 2020, and ended with a K-9 track and arrest Thursday morning, April 9, 2020, on a trail just north of Newcastle Beach Park.   The suspects targeted homes near or along the Lake Washington shoreline from south of Meydenbauer Bay to Pleasure Point. After one of the burglaries, a homeowner confronted the male suspect and the suspect pulled a gun on him. Two vehicles and some of the stolen property has been recovered.  The crime spree includes at least seven cases.

Stay safe at home during COVID-19

As we all stay home to stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s a good idea to take extra safety precautions to protect your family and home.  Bellevue police arrested two suspects this past weekend in two separate burglary cases.  Fortunately, no one was injured in either incident.

“In times of crisis, we can see the best and unfortunately, the worst in people. Criminals always look for easy opportunities to steal from you.  With folks at home right now, they’re starting to take the risk and burglarize occupied homes,” said Police Chief Steve Mylett.  “We all need to look out for each other, report anyone who’s acting suspicious, and keep a helpful eye out for our neighbors.”

BPD-9PMRoutine

There are simple proactive steps you can take every night to protect yourself.  It’s called #9PMRoutine.

  • Remove valuables from your vehicle, lock doors
  • Close your garage, lock interior door
  • Close & lock exterior doors and windows
  • Turn on all exterior lights
  • Set car & home alarms

It’s also a good practice to keep your garage closed and doors locked during the daytime unless you’re outside.  And if someone comes to your door, do not open it unless you know who they are.   And if you see someone acting suspiciously, call 911.

“This is a challenging time for everyone, and we don’t want anyone to be a victim of crime on top of the COVID-19 stress,” Mylett said. “We are here to help, and we ask you to do these simple steps every evening to help keep yourself, your loved ones and your property safe.”

Burglary suspect jailed after breaking into multiple homes

Flower potA Seattle man is in custody after he broke into three homes in the Newport Hills area over the weekend.  One victim says the man used a flowerpot in her yard to break a glass door and enter her home, just after 1:30 pm on Saturday.  She yelled and screamed at him until he fled.  The resident then called a neighbor, who spotted the suspect and held him a gunpoint until officers arrived.Burg

After the 38-year-old suspect was arrested, officers found the woman’s credit cards on his person. He denied any knowledge of the burglary or how the victim’s personal items got into his pocket.

During the investigation, two other residents reported the suspect had entered their homes as well.

CounterfitFollowing the arrest, the suspect damaged the inside of the patrol car, spat on an officer’s face, and five fake $100 bills were recovered from his pockets.  He was booked into jail on charges of Burglary, Assault, Malicious Mischief, and Forgery.

Bellevue police arrest shooting suspect

Officers arrested a 23-year-old suspect in connection with an attempted occupied home burglary early Sunday morning, April 5th.  The victims stated nine family members were in the home (400 Blk 128th Ave SE) when they heard loud banging on the door, followed by gunshots.  The suspect was becoming increasingly angry because the residents wouldn’t open the front door.  When officers arrived, they found the suspect on the front porch and took him into custody.

Officers recovered a 9mm handgun and ammunition on the suspect.  The suspect’s car also had multiple bullet holes in the trunk area.  And the front door handle to the residence was damaged by the gunfire. Luckily, no one in the home was injured.

The Bellevue Fire Department transported the suspect to the hospital for medical clearance, at which point the suspect threatened to kill all the officers involved in his arrest.

Later, a detective recognized the suspect on a video released by Renton police. Renton PD was looking for a gunman who shot at a convenience store clerk and shot bullet holes into his green Honda about a half-hour before the Bellevue home burglary attempt.  Detectives have confirmed it’s the same suspect in both incidents.

In Bellevue, the suspect was booked into jail on charges of Assault 1st Degree, Attempted Burglary 1st Degree, Aiming/Discharging Firearms, and Felony Harassment.

Police launch tool to report “Stay home, stay healthy” violations

With Gov. Inslee’s “Stay home, stay healthy” order in effect, the Bellevue police have developed an easy way for residents to report violations. Reports logged into the MyBellevue app will generate a heat map showing where there are potentially illegal gatherings or business activity.

Please, do not call 911 to report these gatherings. 911 is for emergencies only. Officers will not respond to 911 calls about violations of the Stay Home mandate.

Police strongly encourage residents and visitors to follow the governor’s order, to better protect the health and safety of everyone in the community.

“The vast majority of people in our community are following the ‘stay at home’ order and are being safe,” said Chief Steve Mylett. “But we need your help in reporting violations where there may be a large number of people at risk.”

Report violations online

You can report these incidents through the MyBellevue app on your electronic device or the MyBellevue online portal.

  • Log onto the app on your phone or online at Bellevuewa.gov.
  • Click on new request.
  • Click Report gatherings.
  • Click issue location and move the pin over the location or add the address manually.
  • Click submit.

Screen shot - peopleAs the reports are filed, the app will show officers hotspots throughout the city.

“As officers are available, they will respond to these reports and use this opportunity to inform and educate people about the state’s stay-at-home mandate,” explains Major Andrew Popochock, who oversees the patrol division.

“We are not going to arrest people; we are educating them to stay home. The ‘Stay home, stay healthy’ mandate is for everyone’s safety,” Popochock added.

These are informational reports only and officers will respond on an availability basis.

The order does allow people to leave their homes for certain activities, including shopping for groceries, going to medical appointments, picking up or delivering take-out food, going to work at an essential business or going outside for exercise.

Police Chief makes plea to the Chinese community

There are reports in the media, on social media, and spreading throughout the community that people of Chinese heritage are increasingly becoming targets of hate crimes and being blamed for COVID-19.

“I am disturbed to hear that people are being targeted and blamed for COVID 19. If this is happening here in Bellevue it needs to stop. I encourage any victim of a hate crime or bias-related incident to contact their local police department and report the incident – we need to know about it. We will vigorously pursue and arrest anyone who commits a hate crime in Bellevue” said Police Chief Steve Mylett.

The Chief says he’s convinced incidents are occurring and they’re just not being reported. “I need our Chinese neighbors to tell us if they are a victim of hate because of their Chinese heritage. The Bellevue Police Department is here to protect and serve you, but we can’t help if we don’t know about it.”

How to report

Anti-stigmaTo report an immediate threat or ongoing incident, call 911 immediately. If an incident occurred in the recent past, you can easily report it online at www.bellevuewa.gov/police. An officer will review it and will contact you if more information is needed.

“These are stressful times for everyone. COVID-19 doesn’t recognize race, nationality, or ethnicity, and viruses don’t discriminate,” Mylett said. “Please, stop blaming, support one another, heed the orders to stay home. The life you save may be your own or someone close to you.”

Bellevue detectives grab Washington’s Most Wanted suspect

AlvarezBellevue police detectives arrested a 32-year-old prolific offender today at the Snoqualmie Casino.  Daniel Alvarez is most recently wanted in connection with a residential burglary in Mountlake Terrace on February 11, 2020.  According to Mountlake Terrace police, Alvarez and Brendan Morris broke into the Mountlake Terrace home and stole miscellaneous property, including an AR-15 semi-rifle and ammunition.  Morris was apprehended on February 19, 2020, in Snohomish County, but Alvarez eluded police until today.

Bellevue detectives developed information about Alvarez’s whereabouts and tracked him down late this afternoon at the Snoqualmie Casino.  Alvarez has at least nine felony convictions and has a history of eluding police. “Daniel Alvarez is a career criminal and a danger to our community.  He puts everyone, including officers, at risk because of his propensity to flee a scene when approached by law enforcement,” said Captain David Sanabria.  “We are safer today with Alvarez behind bars.”  The arrest was a joint operation between Bellevue, Mountlake Terrace, and Auburn police departments.

Alvarez was arrested on charges of Residential Burglary, Theft of a firearm, Unlawful Possession of a firearm and a felony warrant.  A 32-year-old woman who was with Alvarez was also arrested on drug charges.
