National Night Out August 6th

It’s time to plan your event for National Night Out (NNO)!  NNO is an excellent opportunity for neighbors to not only have some fun, but get together to strengthen community ties, enhance police partnerships, and to discuss crime prevention strategies.  And if you want to have Bellevue Police or Bellevue Fire stop by your event, you need to make your request now.  NightOut_carousel

The Bellevue Police Department Crime Prevention unit says neighborhood watch programs are the first step and many times the best step in crime prevention. NNO is a great way to kick start that effort, and you can invite Bellevue Police to your event to learn safety tips.

Based on call loads, Bellevue Police officers and Bellevue Firefighters will make every effort to attend your registered event.  But they can’t show up if they don’t know about it.  So, make your request now!

To register your party, send an email to crimeprevention@bellevuewa.gov and the fire department at fireinfo@bellevuewa.gov.  Provide the location, time of your event, and the approximate number of people participating.     We will do our best to accommodate all requests.

Safe, fun Bellevue Family 4th marks another major success

The numbers are in, and the Bellevue Family 4th was a resounding success. Family 4th Crowd City officials estimate that more than 60,000 people gathered in Bellevue Downtown Park for the 4th of July festivities. The daylong celebration included musical entertainment, a food court, a dance party and of course the fireworks extravaganza.

What the celebration didn’t include . . . trouble.  According to police reports, there were no incidents that required law enforcement attention.  stickers with kidsOfficers were visible throughout the event, talking with residents and many handed out stickers to kids.

Bellevue’s brand-new online fireworks was also a hit.  Residents logged in 153 reports of illegal fireworks online and through the MyBellevue app.  Dedicated police and fire patrols issued five citations, three written warnings, and countless verbal warnings. Bellevue’s dispatch center, NORCOM, saw a slight reduction in calls over last year. Moving forward, the department will evaluate the data and strategize ways to improve the system for next year.

Report illegal fireworks online July 4th

It’s time to celebrate our country’s 243rd birthday, but the 4th of July is also when we see a spike in fire danger, injuries, and noise complaints. To help reduce these problems, you’ll now be able to report illegal fireworks online or through the MY-BELLEVUE-icon-2016_1024x1024 (002)MyBellevue app on July 4th. The fireworks reporting section will be active from 8:00 p.m. on July 4th to 2:00 a.m. on July 5th. Here’s what you do to file a complaint:

  • Log onto the app on your phone or online at Bellevuewa.gov
  • Click on new request, fireworks reporting
  • Click issue location and add the address or move the pin
  • Click submit

Fireworks reporting heat map - CopyThe app will create a heat map that will show hot spots with the most activity, the Bellevue Police and Fire Departments will have dedicated crews responding to those areas on the evening of July 4th.  Please note, you will not get an individual reply, but your report will be documented.

Bellevue Fire Marshal Ken Carlson says this is a pilot program to improve the city’s response, “We see a significant increase in 911 calls on the 4th of July because of fireworks complaints.  Many times, the calls lack a specific address.  The app will allow residents to put in an address or drop the locator pin near the location. It will also reduce the number of 911 calls, leaving lines open for emergencies.”   You should still call 911 if there’s a fire, injury, or imminent threat of danger.

This year our fire danger is forecasted to be extremely high, so people need to be extra vigilant. And safety is always a concern, “Fireworks are dangerous. Every year people show up in emergency rooms with firework-related injuries,” adds Fire Marshal Carlson. “It’s just not worth the risk of getting hurt or starting a fire.”

Light_Wright_Twitter_WEBThe fine for lighting illegal fireworks in Bellevue is $1000. All fireworks are illegal in the city, except for permitted displays. We encourage you to celebrate at one of the public events on the Eastside. Here are a couple of fireworks shows:

Have a fun and safe 4th!

Bellevue police arrest two in Crossroads Park shooting

HAPPENING NOWBellevue police have arrested two suspects in connection with the weekend shooting in Crossroads Park.  Both male suspects, age 22 and 19-years-old are Bellevue residents.

Police originally responded to Overlake Hospital after two victims showed up with gunshot wounds just before midnight on June 22nd.   The 18 and 22-year-old male victims told investigators they were sitting in their car at the park when another car drove up, and the suspects shouted something out the window.  That verbal altercation escalated into a fight where one of the suspects fired a gun.  The two victims suffered serious foot and leg injuries.

Witnesses and the victims’ description lead detectives to narrow in on a few suspects. The 22-year-old suspect was arrested on assault charges, and the 19-year-old was arrested for rendering criminal assistance for driving the suspect from the scene.  Charges have been referred to the King County Prosecutor’s office.

Bellevue Police investigating two weekend shootings

The second shooting happened at 1:30 a.m. on June 23rd in 100 Blk 109th Ave SE.  The occupants reported that someone was shooting into the home while they were sleeping.  Bellevue police were able to safely get the occupants out of the home and determine that an unknown suspect had shot multiple times at the house.  There were no injuries.

The Bellevue Police Department continues to investigate these shootings.  Anyone with information regarding either case is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or submit a tip online.
