Officers responded to a residence after receiving a call about a man with a gun.  While en-route, officers learned the reporting party’s husband was suicidal and armed with a handgun, which he had fired into the ground while she was calling 911.  Upon arrival, and at the request of officers, the caller was able to flee the residence.  The caller was taken by officers and temporarily placed in a neighbor’s house for her safety.  Officers surrounded the residence and attempted several times to establish contact with the suspect.  The suspect could be seen inside the house armed with a handgun and, at times, holding it to his head.  After several minutes, the suspect came out from a rear sliding glass door.  He was still armed with the handgun and holding it to his head.  The suspect ignored commands from officers on the perimeter and retreated inside.  After another brief period, the suspect re-emerged from the back door.  This time, his hands were empty, and he followed commands.  A separate contact team was formed, and the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  The handgun (45cal/1911) was located and seized as evidence.  There were no other firearms in the residence.  No injuries were sustained to anyone.  Evidence found at the scene suggested the suspect fired a single round, which impacted the floor of a wood deck in the backyard.  A Code Red (Reverse 911) was initiated for the surrounding area but was canceled once the suspect was in custody.  After the investigation, probable cause was established for Assault 2nd degree (DV).  The suspect was transported to jail, where he was booked for the offense.

Bellevue couple falls victim to deportation scam

Police are investigating a scam involving an elderly Bellevue couple who lost $1,000,000 to fraud. Investigators say the couple received a phone call claiming the couple sent fake vaccines overseas and that they were going to be sued. The couple protested they weren’t the senders and the scammer said to file a police report to “prove their innocence.” The couple then received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer in China threatening to arrest and deport them to China.

The couple wired money as directed, but the scammers said that wasn’t enough and again threatened them with deportation, so they wired more money. The scammers were in Singapore and spoke the couple’s native language, Mandarin. “This elaborate fraud preys on the victim’s vulnerabilities to devastating effect,” said Major Travess Forbush. “We cannot emphasize enough that the police will never contact you and ask for money instead of being arrested or deportation.”

This is the second fraud case like this in the region. The other case involves a $750,000 loss to theft.

Tell friends, loved ones, and neighbors to always hang up on callers claiming to be government officials asking for money. Also, delete all similar emails or emails saying you’ll receive money by sending your personal information. If you think there’s a chance something might be legitimate, call your local authorities or agency and verify it before ever sending any money or gift cards.

Officers responded to a boyfriend and girlfriend fighting throughout the night. According to the anonymous caller, he witnessed the assault during the night, and he added there was a No Contact Order between the subjects. The caller was no longer on scene, and despite the uncooperative male, officers were able to determine the female who was hiding in a suitcase in the bedroom. Officers confirmed the no contact order, noting the male as the protected party, so the female was arrested. The female told officers about an assault and false imprisonment, which backed up the caller’s statements, so the male was arrested. Both were booked into jail.

A suspect pushed the mother of his child to the ground in Seattle, causing her pain.  The victim was with her 10-year-old son at the time, so she took him and returned to Bellevue. The suspect followed them to their apartment and blocked their car in. The victim called the police. Officers developed probable cause and arrested the male. Seattle did not have officers available to respond, so they requested Bellevue book the subject into jail, and they would submit charging documents to complete the case.

Early morning crime spree suspect captured

Just after 5:00 am Thursday, a store employee in the 2600 block Bellevue Way NE reported an attempted carjacking and assault. He says someone opened his car door, pulled him from the vehicle, and punched him repeatedly in the face. The victim then says the 20-year-old suspect got in the vehicle but didn’t know how to start the car. The suspect reportedly left the vehicle, punched the victim several times more, threw him to the ground, and demanded his keys. When the victim told him they were in the car, the suspect fled, leaving behind his sweatshirt.

Victim’s car and the suspect’s sweatshirt

As officers set a perimeter, another assault call came in nearby in the 10400 block NE 32nd Pl. Officers found a man bleeding from his head and with multiple abrasions. This victim says he was taking out the trash when someone jumped him from behind and violently attacked him. The victim says the suspect was grabbing for his keys and eventually attempted to open the doors to a vehicle. When he failed, he fled the area.

Retention pond where the suspect was captured

Both Bellevue and King County Sheriff’s K9 units arrived and quickly searched the area.  A short time later, King County’s K9 located the suspect in a retention pond east of Bellevue Way NE on SR 520.

Officers transported the suspect to the hospital due to his high level of intoxication.  Once he was medically cleared, he was booked into jail on investigation of two counts Robbery 2.

Call it a win, May 11th protest in review

Tuesday evening, May 11th, Bellevue police responded to three competing demonstrations in the downtown area. Two of the groups remained stationary, and the third started at Downtown Park and moved into the street on Bellevue Way NE, walking up to the corner of NE 8th and Bellevue Way.

Bike officers were able to keep the two groups apart as they shouted at each other, at one point having to create a line to separate the groups after one crossed the street where the other group had been all evening.

Fire on the sidewalk

The group dressed in black started a small fire and were pointing lasers at other protesters during their march. No one involved in the different demonstrations was arrested.

Alleged assault

A 32-year-old Lynnwood man was arrested on investigation of felony assault for allegedly pulling an officer off his bike. That incident appears to be separate from the demonstrations. He was booked into jail.

Bellevue police prepared and responded to Tuesday’s events based on intelligence gathered in the days leading up to the demonstrations. Officers monitored communications from various sites. They learned the group planning to meet at Downtown Park was encouraging people to bring projectiles and to dress in all black to avoid being recognized. One post also called for “round 2” in Bellevue, presumably referencing the May 31st riots.

This group also posted a map of areas to avoid due to video cameras and several police and fire radio frequencies. In fact, throughout the event, this group was monitoring police radio frequencies, posting the text of exact radio communications to their group.

Given the totality of information and intelligence from partnering agencies, Bellevue police developed a plan and strategy to prevent criminal activity and keep everyone safe. This was accomplished while giving the demonstrators a safe space to express their First Amendment rights.

“It was a very successful event as far as we are concerned,” said Chief Steve Mylett. “We are happy the officer who was pulled from his bike did not sustain major injuries. As far as we know the suspect in that assault was not affiliated with the protest groups”. Chief Mylett added, “No civilians were injured during the protests, and there was no property damage. At the end of the day, we protected our downtown core from potential damage, and we protected everyone’s right to demonstrate. I’ll call that a win.”

Case #21-22472

Prolific mail thief busted

Thanks to an alert resident, patrol officers located and arrested a very busy mail thief, recovering well over 350 pieces of stolen mail.  Shortly before 4:00 am this morning, officers responded to a potential mail theft near SE 60th St and Forest Dr. SE. The caller reported the driver of a white muscle car with a loud muffler had attempted to steal her mail.

Stolen mail under a jacket on the passenger’s side floor

A patrol officer responded and combed the area, and located a vehicle matching the description that had made an illegal turn and didn’t have license plates.  The officer conducted a traffic stop, and as he identified the driver, he noticed what appeared to be a pile of mail under a coat.

In addition to the traffic infraction, the driver was driving with a suspended license and was placed under arrest.  The 25-year-old Renton resident gave the officer permission to search the car, and the officer recovered 368 pieces of mail throughout the vehicle.  The stolen mail had addresses from Bellevue, Renton, Seattle and Federal Way. Officers also recovered a Washington driver’s license belonging to someone else and stolen credit cards.

The suspect was booked into jail on investigation of mail theft and driving with a suspended license.

The mail will be forwarded to the United States Postal Inspection Service and return to the rightful owners.  The investigation is ongoing.

We sincerely appreciate our residents working with us and alerting us to these crimes.  This is the second mail theft bust in two nights, thanks to residents reporting suspicious activity.

$64,000 Dodge Challenger recovered in ID Theft bust

Two Detroit men are behind bars, accused of stealing the identities of twelve people and racking up some hefty charges. Detectives say the pair falsified IDs and then used them to open credit lines, purchasing a $64,000 Dodge Challenger, a $6400 gold bracelet, and various other items from two different shopping malls.

Detectives believe the two men, ages 25 and 27-years-old, flew into Seattle from Detroit during the week of April 19th, 2021.  One of the suspects attempted to purchase a $51,000 2019 Camaro from a Bellevue dealership with a counterfeit ID but failed to pick it up. The victim received a credit alert and contacted the dealership stating he did not apply for credit. The manager called Bellevue police.

Detectives quickly investigated and learned one suspect’s identity as he had used his own cellphone number. The investigation continued, and three days later, detectives watched both suspects get into a red Dodge Challenger and learned it was recently purchased. The dealership identified a photo of one of the suspects, stating he bought the Challenger using a different name with a counterfeit ID.

Detectives then watched both suspects patronize two shopping malls, purchase several high-end items, and eventually arrested both men at the Challenger following the shopping spree. Both were arrested on investigation of various charges, including Identity Theft 1st Degree and Theft of Motor Vehicle.

After obtaining a search warrant, detectives searched the Dodge Challenger and recovered eight Washington and three Oregon counterfeit driver’s licenses, 17 new Apple iPhones, four new Apple watches, and a Costco credit card with a nearly $10,000 limit.  Detectives are notifying all 11 known victims and are investigating if there are others.
