Bellevue Police Arrest Suspects in Homicide

Earlier this week, Bellevue Police investigators arrested four individuals suspected in participating in a homicide that occurred earlier this year at a Bellevue Park. The rare killing marked the first murder in the city in more than three years.

On April 3rd, 18-year-old Josue Flores was found deceased in Goldsmith Park in Bellevue after having been shot several times. Investigators with the Bellevue Police Department immediately began collecting evidence at the scene, and would later recover additional physical and digital evidence that led them to the identification of the four suspects. The investigation has also linked themwith a shooting that occurred in Everett earlier the same night.

Yesterday, investigators with the Bellevue Police Department, including the patrol division, investigations division, SWAT team, and Special Operations Group, working together with investigators from the Everett Police Department, arrested three suspects. Today, a fourth juvenile suspect was arrested after he was released from King County youth detention.

The three adult suspects were booked into the King County Jail for first degree murder. The juvenile was booked into the King County Youth Detention center for first degree murder. The suspects are expected to make their first court appearance today or tomorrow.

Bellevue Chief of Police Steve Mylett, in speaking about this case, stated: “Our entire community is safer with these violent individuals behind bars.” Mylett continued: “I commend the hard work of the many investigators with the Bellevue Police Department, the Everett Police Department, and the King County Prosecutor’s Office that were involved with this case.”

Chief Mylett will be available for media interviews regarding this case today at Bellevue City Hall from 2-3 p.m..

Bellevue Police achieve major staffing milestone

Badge512For the first time in over eight years, the Bellevue Police Department has no openings for commissioned officers. The department hired 21 officers this year and has several applicants lined up when new positions become available.

What made the difference? A $16,000 hiring bonus for experienced officers who want to work in Bellevue. “It’s been amazing to see the response to our lateral officer hiring incentives,” says Chief Steve Mylett. “The City Council approved the $16,000 hiring bonus late last year, and the applications just started rolling in. It was a game-changer.” Mylett adds.

From January through June, 133 officers from agencies all over the country applied with Bellevue Police, that’s more than quadruple the total number of applications received the year before. Besides the hiring bonus, the Chief also added more recruiting staff, background investigators, and trainers. The additional resources sped up the hiring process.

“I commend our recruiters, training staff, and leadership team for their dedication and drive through this process. Everyone has worked incredibly hard, including line officers who helped spread the word about the Bellevue Police Department,” says Chief Mylett.

Police departments nationwide have faced significant obstacles in hiring for the past few decades. A strong economy offers high-paying jobs without the risks associated with a career in law enforcement. Also, baby boomers began retiring, and others have become disenfranchised with police work given the national narrative.

Chief Mylett says once his team identified these issues, he knew he could address them. “Bellevue is an amazing and safe place to work. And our officers receive strong support from the City Council, the City Manager, and City Leadership Team. Most importantly, our department receives tremendous support from the greater Bellevue community. I was confident that all we needed to do was attract the best candidates and show them what we have to offer. And it worked.”

Bellevue Police still have 8.5 non-commissioned positions open, including four Police Support Officers and four in the Records Department. For more information about those openings, please visit Governmentjobs.com.

Bellevue man arrested for child porn, police increase emphasis on child sex predators

Police Patch Color

Bellevue Special Assault detectives arrested a 64-year-old Bellevue man on child pornography charges early Wednesday morning. The arrest comes after a several month-long investigation prompted by a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Bellevue detectives, with assistance from the Seattle Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, served a search warrant on the suspect’s apartment in the 10700 Block NE 4th St. They seized a computer and other electronic devices.

Wednesday’s arrest is the second significant bust in just over a month. On July 31st, detectives with the Special Assault Unit also arrested 23-year-old Elliott Butterworth on child pornography charges. After executing a search warrant in the 10200 Block SE 3rd St., detectives confiscated eight computers, several phones, and multiple storage devices. King County Prosecutors charged Butterworth with dealing and possession of child pornography.

In response to an increase in the number of child pornography complaints, Bellevue Police are dedicating additional resources and officer training to crack down on child sex predators. “Child pornographers profoundly damage these children through sexual exploitation and abuse. Some of the victims are as young as infants, and the majority are not even 12-years-old,” explains Captain of Investigations Travess Forbush. “The Bellevue Police Department is expanding its efforts to crack down on these horrific crimes. The increase in investigative hours will lead to more search warrants and arrests,” Forbush adds.

Investigators say it’s challenging to identify those who are trafficking in child pornography as they are often doing business on the dark web. If anyone ever sees disturbing images of children, you are asked to call 911 or report it online on the Bellevue Police website.

Armed car prowl suspect dies of a self-inflicted gunshot wound

28-year-old Adam Gua was found dead in a Seattle apartment this morning after a standoff with Seattle Police.  Gua was wanted in connection with a car prowl in Bellevue and for shooting at a Bellevue police officer on August 30th.

Around 3:30 am, Seattle police responded to a call from a person in a Capitol Hill apartment who thought Gua was sleeping on the couch.  The resident recognized Gua from media reports.

Seattle SWAT and the Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to talk with Gua, but he refused, and officers later heard a single gunshot.  After Seattle PD entered the apartment, officers found him dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Bellevue police need help locating a dangerous armed car prowl suspect

Bellevue officers confronted two car prowl suspects in the past week; both had guns, and one fired his weapon. On August 29th, an officer was responding to a car prowl in progress in the area of 1600 184th Ave NE. As the officer approached the suspect, he ran away and fired a shot back at the officer. No one was injured, and investigators did find a spent bullet casing, although they did not recover the gun. K9 search teams, King County Sheriff’s Office Guardian One, Kirkland PD, Clyde Hill PD, and Redmond PD all assisted in the search but were unable to locate the suspect.

Suspect Adam Anthony Gua

Detectives have identified the suspect as 28-year-old Adam Anthony Gua. Gua has numerous felony and misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.  Gua is 5’10”, weighs 150 pounds, has reddish-brown hair and sometimes wears glasses. If you see him or know where he is, please call 911.

Bellevue bike officers responded to another car prowl call the day before near 500 Bellevue Way NE. The officers asked the first suspect to step out of the car, but he took off on foot. The suspected pulled a handgun out of his waistband and threw it as he continued to flee. He was eventually pepper-sprayed and apprehended, and investigators recovered the stolen gun. Officers arrested the second suspect as well.

These two instances show how dangerous these criminals can be and how important it is not to approach them.  Please call 911 and don’t confront these suspects yourself.  As a reminder, don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain sight, and be sure to lock your doors.  Home surveillance video has also proven to be a big help in identifying suspects.
