Bellevue Detectives capture prolific locker thieves

Bellevue police detectives have arrested two suspects who’ve been wreaking havoc at local gyms for the past ten months. Investigators say 33-year-old Joseph Gill and 30-year-old D’Mario Mallory appear to target gyms that don’t have security systems.

After checking in at the front desk, the two suspects would cut the locks off lockers and steal wallets containing cash and credit cards. The pair placed new locks on the lockers, causing a delay in reporting. Mallory and Gill then immediately used the stolen credit cards to buy gift cards. While the thefts occurred at gyms all over King County, dozens were reported at the Kelsey Creek LA Fitness on 148th Ave NE and Main St. in Bellevue.

Detectives identified the suspects after obtaining store surveillance video of both suspects using the stolen credit cards. Search warrants on the suspects’ homes and cars yielded dozens of gift cards and thousands of dollars in Western Union receipts.  Detectives also recovered cut padlocks, bolt cutters, and clothing worn during the crimes.

Detectives arrested Gill on July 1, 2019, while in jail on an unrelated case. They arrested Mallory on August 8, 2019. Both are charged with three counts of identity theft and are currently in custody at King County jail.

LA Fitness is working with Bellevue Police to improve its security measures.  Detectives are encouraging the company to install video surveillance cameras to aid in identifying future suspects.

Investigators warn other theft rings are actively working gyms in the Puget Sound area.  Detectives suggest you check with the management at your gym about cameras and other security measures.

Bellevue Police complete active shooter training

BPD_0907
Bellevue Police active shooter training

Commissioned Bellevue police officers just completed the department’s biannual active shooter training. Scenario-based training is necessary as first responders will do what they are trained to do in a critical incident, including an active shooter.

BPD_0847
Active shooter formation drills

The day-long training involved classroom instruction and movement drills such as deployment, formation, and communication.

It also challenged officers with real-life scenarios which are unpredictable and help first responders make quick decisions that will save lives.

In one scenario, officers must discern between a suspect with a gun and a person with a TV remote, a cell phone, or other objects. In another, officers face mass casualties and an active shooter in the building. “The course gets progressively more complicated, with moving objects, casualties, and increased threats,” says Police Chief Steve Mylett. He adds, “Officers must practice these critical skills of rapid deployment, teamwork, and effective communication. Our highest priority is the preservation of life and to stop the shooter.”

This training is especially timely given the horrific shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

BPD_0919
Bellevue Police active shooter drill

“We pray it never happens here in Bellevue, but we train for every possibility,” Chief Mylett says. “The men and women of the Bellevue Police Department are courageous, well trained, and equipped officers, dedicated to protecting the public.”

Chief Mylett implores everyone to always be conscious of their surroundings and have a plan in case you find yourself in an active shooter situation. “Here in Bellevue and across the country, officers are training hard and doing their part.  The public also needs to do its part. I strongly encourage everyone to watch a video called RUN.HIDE.FIGHT produced by the Houston Police Department. You need to know what to do before it happens. Preparation is key.”

Home burglaries increase, don’t be an easy target

img_0476.jpgBellevue Police have seen an uptick in residential burglaries across the city, in some cases, the residents have been home.  The burglars mainly enter through open or unlocked windows and doors, making off with valuables in plain sight.  The victims report stolen cash, credit and debit cards, laptops and small valuables.

Home video surveillance has been a big help for investigators.  The cameras not only record in high definition helping with identification, but they also send alerts when anyone is captured on camera.  Detectives have been able to solve dozens of cases with the help of the surveillance video. If you capture suspicious activity on your camera, please send it to the police so we can follow up with an investigation.

It is not uncommon to see a rise in burglaries during the warm summer months as people leave windows and doors open to cool off their home.  But that also makes homeowners easy targets for burglars.  Here are some practical steps you can take to protect yourself.

  • Lock your doors and windows
  • Close the garage door
  • Don’t leave valuables, purses, wallets, phones, jewelry, laptops in plain sight of doors and windows
  • Use timers to turn lights on and off at different times of the day or night.
  • Install exterior motion sensor lighting or bright floodlights
  • Install an alarm system or home video surveillance system

Also, it is always a good idea to connect with your neighbors.  Neighborhood Block Watches are the most effective and free methods of crime prevention.  Your neighbor can be your eyes when you are away and report anything suspicious.  Nobody knows your neighborhood like those who live in it.

National Night Out is an annual event that encourages neighborhood gatherings to talk about safety.  NightOut_carouselNNO is August 6th this year, so why not have a neighborhood BBQ or get together? The arrest came after detectives contacted another woman inside the brothel who claimed she was being forced to work there against her will.  The woman says she was in the United States on a temporary VISA and sought work through groups on the social media site WeChat.  After working for a short time, the woman says she tried to leave but wasn’t allowed to until she found her replacement. She says she was forced to see as many as ten customers a day, bringing in up to $2,000 a day.

Detectives believe Crane used both vehicles to drive through neighborhoods and steal packages off porches.

During the investigation, detectives recovered stolen mail, IDs, passports, credit cards, and numerous stolen packages.  A search warrant was also executed on a storage locker in Renton that Crane rented using a stolen identity.  In all, more than 200 pieces of evidence were recovered during both warrants.  Detectives will notify all victims when their property is located and identified.

Crane’s 32-year-old girlfriend, who also lived at the residence, was arrested at the scene on charges of identity theft.  Charges are pending.

Lime Car rideshare vehicles allow people to rent cars by the minute using a cell phone app.  Even with a search warrant, it is difficult for law enforcement to trace the drivers because their identity and credit card information has not been confirmed. Numerous local area police jurisdictions are seeing criminal activity related to the use of Lime Car vehicles.

Additionally, a social media platform associated with home surveillance is helping criminals. Following the arrest, detectives discovered the suspect tracked his crime spree on such an app, noting how infamous his actions were. Investigators say neighbors post videos of the thefts, often before even contacting the police and Crane was able to see all the posts.

More charges are pending against both suspects as the investigation is ongoing.
