A white BMW occupied by a male and a female was involved in a minor collision with a motorcycle in the downtown area.  The driver of the BMW then fled the scene.  The motorcycle rider followed the BMW into the Enatai area and watched as it left the roadway and collided with a tree and a power pole.  The occupants of the BMW then fled the second crash scene on foot.  The top 2/3 of the power pole was completely disconnected from the portion in the ground and was leaning on a tree just above the vehicle.  In addition, there were live power lines sparking in a tree over the BMW, live power lines hanging over the roadway, and a live line laying on the roadway nearby.  Bellevue Fire stayed on-scene to prevent a fire until PSE could respond and cut the power.

While en route to the scene, a responding officer found the female passenger lying face down in the bushes approximately 100 yards south of the vehicle.  She was intoxicated but responsive and eventually transported to the hospital for treatment.  It was determined that the owners of the BMW lived near the accident scene, and additional officers went to the residence.  A K9 also tracked from the accident to the residence.  The officers made entry for community caretaking purposes so that the welfare of the male could be checked since he was not answering the door.  It was believed that he was possibly seriously injured due to the condition of his vehicle at the crash site.  The male was found in an upstairs bedroom and he appeared intoxicated but not seriously injured.  Misdemeanor and felony hit & run charges will be filed for the two collisions.  The investigation is ongoing.

Excellent police work nets armed robbery suspect

Bellevue police detectives arrested a 17-year-old armed robbery suspect in connection with two robberies set up on an internet market app this weekend. Saturday morning, the suspect posted an advertisement on the OfferUp app selling a laptop. When the victim arrived at the agreed-upon location, the suspect pulled a handgun out of his bag, demanding cash. Early Sunday morning, the exact same situation unfolded in the same place with a different victim. This time the suspect offered to sell AirPods as well as a laptop.

Bellevue patrol officers gathered critical evidence and witness statements, and detectives immediately began tracking down the suspect. With the cooperation of OfferUp, investigators were able to identify and locate the suspect within less than 36 hours after the first aggravated robbery.

The Bellevue SWAT team and detectives served a search warrant at the suspect’s residence on Sunday evening. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the King County Youth Detention Center on charges of First Degree Robbery.

These incidents should serve as a warning to anyone buying or selling items on an internet market site such as OfferUp or Craigslist. Please remember to arrange a meeting in a very public, brightly lit location, preferably with lots of cameras, and do not go at night. Also, take someone with you and trust your gut, if it doesn’t feel right, cancel it. While the vast majority of these sales go off without a hitch, a few safety precautions will go a long way to preventing yourself from becoming a victim.

Bellevue detectives arrest armed robbery suspect

ChipotleBellevue detectives arrested 25-year-old DeShaun Nabors at his Puyallup in connection with the armed robbery of the Bellevue Chipotle restaurant at Crossroads Mall on October 27, 2019.  Detectives say Nabors was identified by restaurant management as a former Chipotle employee.  Surveillance allowed investigators to put Nabors and his girlfriend’s car in the area of the Chipotle restaurant at the time of the robbery.

OBFChipotleGunA search warrant on the home produced among other things a gun, coin wrappers and a blue glove, like the gloves Nabors used in the robbery.  Detectives say Nabors is a suspect in at least two other similar robberies and are working together with those jurisdictions.

Nabors has been charged with Robbery in the First Degree and is currently in the King County Jail.

12 arrested in Bellevue vice sting

Bellevue Detectives arrested 12 men for patronizing a prostitute in a two-day undercover vice operation. The sting sends a deliberate message to those seeking to buy sex according to Captain Dave Sanabria, “We don’t want you patronizing a prostitute at all, and we absolutely don’t want you doing it in Bellevue.”

Throughout the operation, 66 men responded to the vice detective’s ads on known prostitution websites. Of the 12 arrested, one was from Bellevue, many others drove to Bellevue from neighboring cities, and one was on business from Georgia. There would have been 13 arrests if the person had been able to find the hotel. One suspect even arrived in a Ferrari.

“Prostitution is not a victimless crime,” Sanabria said. “The majority of the women become victims of rape, robbery, and assault. Most are also coerced or forced to continue in the sex trade by a pimp and their economic circumstances.”

Those arrested could also face new consequences. In addition to facing a misdemeanor charge of Patronizing a Prostitute, the Bellevue city prosecutor will now recommend suspects attend a mandatory ten-week Stopping Sexual Exploitation program through Seattle Against Slavery.

“Our goal is for these subjects to stop soliciting prostitutes,” Sanabria explains. “This program gives them the time, ten weeks, and the education to understand how sexually exploiting women causes them harm, plus they’ll learn tools to create healthy relationships in their own lives.”

Sky Metalwala still missing 8 years later

It’s been eight years, and still no trace of Sky Metalwala. Sky was just 2-years-old when he vanished from his mother’s vehicle on November 6, 2011. Julia Biryukova says she left Sky in her car after it ran out of gas in Bellevue, and that’s when he disappeared.

Sky Metalwala, 2-years-old

A police investigation revealed inaccuracies in Julia’s statement, including the fact that her car was not out of gas and had no mechanical problems. Julia spoke with investigators the day she reported her son missing but has since refused to participate in the police investigation.

“Our detectives still want to talk with Julia Biryukova. We believe she knows what happened to Sky,” said Chief Steve Mylett. “We will never forget Sky, and we will not stop looking for him. This is very much an open investigation,” the Chief added. “Someone somewhere knows something. Please come forward and tell us.”

To date, investigators with the Bellevue Police Department, The FBI, and Redmond Police Department have pursued over 2,500 tips and spent more than 14,000 hours investigating this case. To date, the cost has been over two million dollars.

The Chief says he is undeterred. “I will spend any amount of money and go anywhere if our efforts result in finding Sky. He deserves that.”

Bellevue vice unit employs unique method to aid sex trafficking victims

Bellevue vice detectives are going straight to the source in an effort to help sex workers. The detectives joined a prostitution chat forum as BPD Vice.  The post states in part, “This is not a setup… it’s an attempt to break down barriers that may prevent individuals from reporting crimes against them.”

Many times, providers are afraid to contact law enforcement even if they are a victim of a violent crime.  They fear they will be in trouble. Bellevue police want to assure them; they won’t. “It’s never OK for anyone to be a victim of crime. If you are a victim of robbery, rape, assault, or sex trafficking, please report it. We are here to help but can’t if we don’t know about it,” said Captain David Sanabria.

Since the detective joined the forum, the post has received a lot of attention. One longtime provider has already contacted the vice unit and now encourages others on the forum to do the same.

Even self-proclaimed ‘hobbyists,’ or those seeking services, are reacting to the post.

hobbyist post1 (002)
‘Hobbyist’ response to BPD Vice outreach.

This innovative idea is also receiving national attention and high praise. “We have never seen an agency reach out directly online to offer support for victims of human trafficking. The reaction has reverberated far from Washington state. This is something potential victims across the country saw,” said CEO Rob Spectre of ChildSafe.AI, a company that creates software to help law enforcement reduce child sex trafficking. “Some of these vulnerable communities can seem like a lost cause,” Spectre adds. “The Bellevue vice unit’s effort transcends that cynicism and shows law enforcement can take the first step to build a different relationship.”

“Will there be skeptics?  Undoubtedly.  But if this effort saves one person or starts one conversation that helps, then it will be a success,” Sanabria adds.

If you or someone you know is a sex trade victim, please contact our vice unit at VICEHT@Bellevuewa.gov.

Bellevue officers help man find housing

57-year-old Brid lived out of a camper in Bellevue for four years.  He was frustrated and feeling hopeless. “I couldn’t find a place to live, and I couldn’t get help. It’s almost impossible for a single male out there. I felt like all I did was fill out forms and wait. I waited many years, and then I met Officers Neese and Wallace.”

BPD_1283
Brid and Officer Darlene Wallace

Bellevue Officers Greg Neese and Darlene Wallace both issued warnings and ticketed Brid’s vehicles many times over the years. They even had his vehicles towed, but always offered hope and a connection to resources. “Over the years as I got to know Brid, he genuinely wanted help,” said Officer Wallace.  “I got him in touch with The Sofia Way, with someone who specializes in helping car campers.  But credit goes to Brid for being willing to do the work to get off the streets,” Wallace says.

Officer Neese agrees Brid’s desire to change was genuine. “Brid admitted where he made mistakes and worked on his sobriety. I was happy to support him any way I could.  I helped him get rid of some 20-year-old warrants. I even gave him a generator to keep him going.”

Eventually, The Sophia Way helped Brid move into Camp Second Chance, a ‘tiny home’

homeless encampment. Brid credits the Bellevue officers for changing his life. “If it weren’t for Officers Neese and Wallace, I never would have found this place. They visited me; they stood up for me and kept me safe. They got me the help I needed.”

Brid’s currently in therapy and has been off drugs for several years. He’s working fulltime, has reconnected with his family and is looking to move into an apartment. Brid says, “I never knew life could be this good. I’m hopeful and thankful to Bellevue PD.”

Both officers Wallace and Neese say help is available for anyone who wants it, whether it’s housing, substance abuse or other social service needs.  And Bellevue officers are available to help make that connection.

An officer conducted a social contact with a subject and during conversation obtained the suspect’s name prior to him walking away.  The officer learned the suspect had a misdemeanor warrant and re-contacted the subject with another officer.  The officers advised the suspect he was under arrest and the suspect turned around and placed his hands behind his back.  Once contact was made with the suspect he tensed up and would not cooperate.  The suspect refused all verbal commands and after being handcuffed was resisting.  It took numerous officers to get him into the patrol vehicle and the suspect was placed in a hobble and helmet.  Fire responded and cleared the suspect.  While en route to jail, the suspect continued to hit his head and was able to hit his nose on the door causing a laceration. The suspect was taken to the hospital and received stitches and was then booked into jail.
